Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Blizzards

There are many different types of extreme weather. They all share some common factors such as high winds and some type of water. Most extreme storms can cause a lot of damage.  Hurricanes form over warm water bodies. A tornado is also called a twister. A blizzard is called a well, blizzard. By now I think you know what the topic is today. It is hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards.  Let’s start with hurricanes.

Did you know that hurricanes kill more people than all the other storms combined? They kill a estimated 1,200 people in the United States. They can uproot trees. They can blow the roofs off houses. They are common in warm tropical climates. They are rated on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. It is a little long I call it a SSHW Scale. They are the worst storm in some peoples opinion. When they get here they have lost most of their power. Like tornados they are rated on a 5 ratings scale.

A typical hurricane can last up to 4 × as many hours.(12 hours). They can last anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. Hurricane John lasted 31 days. That is a whole month! There no difference between hurricanes and typhoons. A hurricane and a typhoon and a cyclone are the same thing! They just have different names.

Similar to hurricanes, tornados can be very dangerous. Tornadoes are rated on a EF Scale. (Enhanced Fujita Scale.) They can can have winds up to 300 miles per hour. They can uproot trees also. They form a lot in the Tornado Alley. Because warm, humid air from Mexico comes up and cold, dry air from Canada comes down they form a tornado.

Another storm is a blizzard. It I can be hard to see in blizzards. That is called white-out. For a blizzard to be a blizzard it has to be these 3 things. 1, Sustained winds or frequent gusts of wind greater than 35 miles per hour. 2, They have to have visibility under ¼ of a mile. 3, They have to be sustained for a least 3 hours.

I know that I didn’t say that I would do thunderstorms but here we are. I’ll do super-cell thunderstorms too. But I’ll do thunderstorms first. Thunderstorms are a big rain shower accompanied by lightning really. Some people don’t know but thunder is lightning. Thunder is just the sound of lightning. You see lightning before you hear thunder because light travels faster than sound.

Now a little about super-cells. Super-cells create the worst tornados. They have everything a regular thunderstorm has and more! It has hail and tornados sometimes. Super-cell thunderstorms are a lot stronger than regular thunderstorms. The hail can be as big as baseballs!

There are many different types of dangerous storms out there, so stay safe if one comes to you.
